Family Matters is a Southwest Missouri Foster Care and Adoption Resource Center
Family matters provides resources, training, and support to strengthen foster, adoptive, and biological families. We believe in community collaboration to connect families to multiple layers of support. We serve children, youth, and parents by providing a variety of support groups, counseling services, and by making connections to community resources.
Strengthening families, children, and youth touched by foster care or adoption through training, support, community collaboration, and advocacy.
Melinda Nicholson is a passionate advocate for the abused/neglected child. Currently in Missouri there are over 10,000 children in the foster care system; approximately 1200-1500 are available for adoption, yet they wait. Melinda is a firm believer that there are no unadoptable children; only unfound families.
Melinda is a Governor appointed member of the Missouri State Foster Care Adoption Board and was confirmed by the Missouri Senate January 2013. Melinda has interned in Washington, DC as well as traveled to Haiti and Paraguay for humanitarian projects. She provides training for classes such as STARS and SPAULDING–the pre-service courses required to become licensed foster care and/or adoptive parents through Children’s Division and private agencies. She also trains Elevated Needs related classes intended to aid caregivers working with children with more severe behavioral and emotional needs. Melinda is a facilitator for Beyond Consequence Institute trainings.
She and her husband have adopted through the foster care system and were foster parents for approximately 12 years.
Melinda has years of experience working with abused and neglected children as well as advocating for them through the child welfare system. Melinda trains in at various venues and was a presenter this summer at Summit 9 in Nashville, TN. Melinda co-chaired and presented at Missouri’s 2012 ONE Conference uniting over 300 resource providers and professionals for training and collaboration purposes and is again operating in those capacities for 2013. Melinda serves on the Greene County as well as the Southwest Regional Advisory Board.
Melinda completed her Bachelors of Science Degree in Human Services at Evangel University and is a lifetime member of Alpha Chi Honor Society. She completed the Trust Based Relationship Institute through TCU to lead and support families with methods in understanding trauma informed care. Melinda received national recognition in September 2012 as an “Angel in Adoption” honored by CCAI in Washington, DC.
Melinda is the Founder & Director of Family Matters Resource Center and is proud to collaborate with agencies and churches across the state of Missouri to aid in helping hurting children and families touched by foster care or adoption.
